About Gail Pantin

GAIL PANTIN
About the artist

Gail Pantin is an established artist who is best known for her panoramic landscapes, portraits and lyrical expressions of life and culture of people, places, and communities. Her art reflects much of her personal journey and experiences in Southeast Asia where she spent 20 years of her life, travelling, exploring, discovering and embracing the culture of the local people.

Born in Trinidad, Gail has made her mark in Asia when she was commissioned by the President of Singapore, SR Nathan to create a series of panoramic sketches of the 1898 neo-Palladian Istana, which means palace in Malay. The Istana is the official residence of the President of Singapore and is also the working office of the Prime Minister. In 2008, her sketches, which captured her observations of the Istana grounds, the people and the environment, were published in a book entitled, A Day at the Istana.

The mastery of her artistic skills is seen in her works of varying medium and diverse stylistic tendencies. From the ancient temples in Cambodia to the modern cityscapes of Japan, time stands still as Gail creates over 100 sketches across Singapore, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, Bali, Japan, Canada, and USA, Trinidad and Tobago. People are her favourite subject, and she captures them with an unpretentious and genuine reflection of what she sees and feels.

Gail first visited Singapore in 1995 and was so taken in with the Tiny Island of Singapore she later returned in 1997. She worked full time as a lecturer at Nanyang Polytechnic for 13 years then followed by lecturing part-time at Republic Polytechnic until 2015. During her years she worked at the Polytechnics she was very involved in various artistic projects in her community and around Singapore. She was also in charge Community Art for Woodgrove, as well as working closely with Woodlands, and the Sembawang GRC.

On her spare time she would capture in drawings various moments of Singapore. Of small shops in the heartlands to one of her favorites the transformation of the development of the Singapore waterfront. Her first sketches of the waterfront were done in the early 2000’s and she continued to capture the waterfront over the next fifteen years.

Gail is continuing her life’s work as a full-time artist. Using her art to capture and document her experiences. She continues to teach and use art to influence the youth in self-expression and building a better more positive community.
